Is this the machine that freezes with metal plates rather than a propylene glycol mix?

Yes it is! I have never used the glycol machines but this does 60 10lb blocks in 24 hours.

Please report back once you've used it a few times. I love the idea behind these machines. I really like that you fill the bags with water and then freeze them. My only concern is how well the blocks will release from the bags.

Do you have to freeze in the bags?

Yes you do, with this particular machine the molds are not designed to just have water placed directly into it.

Well i have made 3 batches so far totaling 180 blocks and I have only had a couple issues with the molds. if you don't have the bag inside the "Lip" of the mold the bag can freeze in the ice. Other than that the blocks come out perfect. You do have to let the block sweat a good 5 minutes in order to get the bag off the ice block, but we sweat blocks anyways so its no big deal.

Just a small tidbit to add, we have a swan that we did all our shaving on last year, but now that we have this ice machine we decided to also buy a snowie block shaver since you don't have to cut the 10lb ice block for it. Well we tried it last night and it will be going up on ebay and we are getting another swan. There is just no comparison between the two. I tried 5 blocks and just couldn't get the snowie to give me non crunchy ice. Its super fast and fun to use but we want quality over quantity.

Thanks for the update.

I've never used the Snowie block ice shaver, but try one of the New Orleans style shavers (horizontal block shavers). With sharp blades and practice you can get very soft snow.

Can you post a pic of the blocks from this machine? Do you split them? @iceclouds
