Which shave ice vendors do you use?

Postby haolegirl » Sat Jun 02, 2018 9:00 pm

Aloha guys, newbie here! I've been putting in a lot of research and making a lot of phone calls and am hoping you all can chime in with your opinions and/or experiences positive or negative? These are my initial impressions...

1800 shaved ice- $99.00 free shipping, lots of products and information (Shaved Ice University)
Shaveicesupplies.com- Also $99.00 free shipping, higher prices on flavors but seems to be the most upfront in their products. Reviews note that they ship quickly and have great customer service.
Southern Snow and Sno Wiz- Cheapest flavors online, does anyone have opinions about taste?
Hypothermias and Real Hawaiian- located on west coast as I am, seem to be knowledgeable as well.
Icy Skyy- Seems to be a newer vendor that wasn't as knowledgeable when I spoke with them. Pricing is lower but the discounts are so steep it makes me think twice. Has anyone ordered from them before?
Snowie- A trusted and well established company, looks decent and well priced.

I'd appreciate any opinions talking me into or out of doing business with any of these companies. Feel free to chime in with vendors not listed here. If you have a company/rep you love, let me know too!

Thanks all :)

Hi Haolegirl, welcome to the forums! If you don’t already know, this forum is owned by Hawaiian Snow Nevada so as open as we are towards other vendors, we are still a bit biased towards ourselves.

You are hitting on a sensitive topic that is quite open for debate and has been debated before on this forum. However, we encourage that! We don’t claim to be the best nor are we the best.

That being said, we are quite familiar and friendly with most of the vendors you listed. You see, shave ice isn’t a big industry and there are quite a few vendors offering similar products. However, most of the vendors you listed has been in the business for well over 20 years and know their stuff. Even though our site is around 10 years old, we have been in the industry ourselves for over 30. Regardless of who you choose, I would stick to vendors with a “proven” history of industry experience. Don’t go cheap on your products since pricing isn’t everything. You are giving this to your customers to eat, if you give them something that you won’t want yourself, you probably are not going to survive long in the business.

1800 has been around awhile and they are mainly focused on east coast shops. I heard some good reviews about them but not familiar with their management. They do have a kick ass site with a lot of information.

ShaveIceSupplies- Well, that is us. We have 1000 plus legitimate customer reviews on our products and many other great reviews about us on the forum. We are one of the first e commerce shave ice supply sites (hence the name). I can’t say we have the best prices, but we can assure you we have full confidence and knowledge in what we sell. No gimmicks, up selling, or false promises. We are a local Hawaiian company, we got a code to stand by since Hawaii is the shave ice capital of the world.

Southern Sno and Sno Wiz are your top choices for sno ball style/southern style shaved ice. Southern Snow also carries some of our machines. Great people there and also some of the most budget friendly pricing you can get on flavoring. They also make their own sno ball machines which has been around for decades.

Hypothermias – Been around for awhile as well, moved from east coast to Arizona. They build trailers which I heard are quite good. If you are in Arizona, they may be your top choice.

Real Hawaiian Ice- The owner did shave ice for many decades and we have history together. They are one of the biggest Hatsuyuki distributors and a top supplier in Southern California. We trade business ideas quite often.

Snowie- Makes their own machines, been around really long. Can’t go wrong with people who develop their own machines, trailers, equipment, and other stuff. Quite innovative if you ask me!

Icy Skyy- I am not familiar with this company, I’m guessing they are new to the trade. From what I heard from our industry peers, they are new and trying to break into the market hence the low pricing , sales, etc. They were also poaching customers from other vendors which is a big no-no in our industry. Their website seems new as well judging by the picture quality and their about us page doesn’t contain much information on the business. Perhaps someone else can input this one. There was a topic about them a few month back which our admin locked, judge for yourself.

There are also other vendors out there, but these are just based on my personal experience with the ones you listed. Like I said, I know most of these vendors and we each have our own piece of the pie and specialty. Just be weary of shops that make quick bucks without backing up with proper servicing and experience. That in my opinion just ruins the shave ice/shaved ice/ sno cone/ sno ball/ industry.

I use a variety of vendors.

For my flower cups I use ShaveIceSupply.com - I have had great service and the shipping has been fast. The prices are right, too.

I also buy some of my syrup from ShaveIceSupply. I think their strawberry is the best around! I will be buying more syrups from them in the future - but right now I have a lot of backstock.

I also buy from snoshack.com. They make an awesome hut that can be used as a tiny fixed location or mobile trailer. I have two of these buildings and I love them! The people at snoshack are incredibly nice and helpful. They make some great flavors, too - and I still order some from them. They sell southern snow ice shavers that are (in my opinion) a little too expensive - but they work well.

I use local companies (restaurant depot, acemart, etc) for most paper goods (napkins, straws, spoons) as I can save a ton of money that way.

Hi everyone, thank you for replies. My apologies for the late response. Summertime is definitely not when one should be trying to get a shave ice venture off the ground

I did order sample sizes from a few of the vendors listed as well as a couple not mentioned on this thread. Ultimately, in addition to taste I considered other factors such as customer service/ease of ordering, processing time, and availability. For me, cost of the product itself doesn't factor in much. It seems to me that you get what you pay for and a $5-15 difference on a gallon of concentrate only translates into an extra cent per serving once mixed and sold.

Ultimately I'll probably be ordering from 2-3 vendors. I really liked that 1800shavedice had a website with a lot of comprehensive information, their section on trailers and carts is very helpful for ideas if you're looking to purchase or build your own setup. The Snoshack people were very nice as mrjosco had mentioned, I like that they sell 1oz sample sizes of concentrate. Then you're not stuck with extra if there's a flavor you don't care for. The shaveicesupplies people were very helpful as well. They seem to have the most technical knowledge on the various machines I was considering and this can be very helpful if I ever need to troubleshoot machine issues over the phone.

I did had some difficulty with Icy Skyy. I called to inquire about will-calling some samples since I was traveling in the area. The man I spoke to insisted he ship them to me instead. I had a hard time understanding his english so I'm not sure if it was just a language barrier or they just didn't want me to go to their facility. Whatever it was, I didn't end up ordering from them because of the headache.

Looking forward to posting more updates once I really have the ball rolling on this thing. Hope you all are having a great summer!

I have ordered flavors before from shaveicesupplies.com and 1800, but now i order primarily from icyskyy since they are local with competitive pricing. i wouldn't believe the Beware of Icy Skyy post, as it is not true and forum owners don't want to remove it for some reason. regardless, they all seem pretty good... not sure what language barrier you're referring to though, the guy who i always work with speaks perfect english.
